Robinson Reading System®
Making reading simple to teach and simple to learn.

The Robinson Reading System®
Making reading simple to teach
and simple to learn.
The Robinson Reading System® is a research-based, linguistic approach to reading instruction developed by Dr. Martha Robinson, PhD. Through direct, explicit instruction and a unique linguistic code, the system helps educators, tutors, schools, and families teach the structure of written English and develop confident, independent readers.
Robinson Reading System®
Effective reading instruction. Simple to teach. Simple to learn.
The Robinson Reading System® is a linguistic approach that teaches reading through direct, explicit instruction. Developed over decades of classroom, tutoring, and intervention experience and grounded in the science of reading, the Robinson Reading System® equips educators, tutors, schools, and families with practical tools to help learners become confident, independent readers.
Whether you are teaching a single student or implementing a literacy program across an organization, the Robinson Reading System® provides the curriculum, instructional materials, assessments, and professional learning needed to deliver effective reading instruction with confidence.
Our Purpose
The Robinson Reading System® was developed to make effective reading instruction easier to teach, easier to learn, and more accessible to every learner. The system emphasizes explicit instruction, cumulative learning, continuous progress monitoring, and practical teaching routines that help learners develop strong decoding skills and become successful readers.
What Makes the Robinson Reading System Different?
The Robinson Reading System is built around several guiding principles:
-
Direct, explicit instruction
-
Systematic teaching of sound-spelling relationships
-
Immediate application in controlled reading text
-
Continuous review and cumulative practice
-
Ongoing assessment and progress monitoring
-
Instruction designed to build confident, independent readers
These principles guide every lesson, instructional material, and professional learning opportunity within the Robinson Reading System®.
What Is a Linguistic Approach to Literacy Instruction?
A linguistic approach to literacy instruction teaches reading by explicitly connecting the sounds of spoken language to the spellings used to represent those sounds in written language. Instruction is organized around the structure of the English language, helping learners understand how speech, print, and meaning work together to support reading and writing.
The Robinson Reading System® introduces learners to the sound-spelling relationships of English through direct, explicit instruction and provides immediate opportunities to apply those relationships in controlled reading text. As learners develop proficiency, they gradually encounter increasingly complex spelling patterns, vocabulary, and connected text while continuing to build automaticity and comprehension.
A linguistic approach emphasizes that reading is a language-based process. Rather than expecting learners to infer patterns independently, instruction makes the structure of written English visible, understandable, and learnable through systematic teaching, monitored practice, and continuous application.
Grounded in the science of reading, the Robinson Reading System® integrates explicit instruction, cumulative review, ongoing assessment, and meaningful reading experiences to help learners become confident, independent readers.
Curriculum and Resources
The Robinson Reading System® includes a growing collection of instructional resources designed to support effective reading instruction, including:
-
Robinson Readers™
-
Instructor Manuals
-
Assessment materials
-
Sound Cards
-
Progress monitoring tools
-
Professional learning resources
Additional curriculum, instructional materials, and implementation supports continue to be developed through Robinson Reading Company.
Professional Learning
Effective instructional materials are only part of successful reading instruction. The Robinson Reading System® emphasizes professional learning that helps educators, tutors, schools, and families implement the system with confidence and fidelity.
Training opportunities include workshops, instructor certification, implementation support, and ongoing professional learning designed to strengthen instructional practice.
Robinson Reading System Instructor Certification
Instructor Certification recognizes individuals who demonstrate competence in assessment, instruction, progress monitoring, and professional practice using the Robinson Reading System®.
Certification is earned through demonstrated skill mastery rather than course completion alone. Candidates participate in professional learning, guided practice, observation, and performance assessments to develop the knowledge and instructional skills needed to implement the Robinson Reading System® effectively.
As the Robinson Reading System® continues to grow, certification opportunities will expand through Registered Research Sites and other implementation partners.
Research and Continuous Improvement
The Robinson Reading System® is continually refined through research, implementation, and collaboration with educators, schools, and research partners.
Robinson Reading Company develops, publishes, and distributes the Robinson Reading System® and its associated curriculum, instructional materials, assessments, and professional learning.
The Dr. Martha Robinson Institute for Literacy and Education advances research, professional learning, and implementation that contribute to the continued study and refinement of the Robinson Reading System®.
Together, Robinson Reading Company and the Martha Robinson Institute share a commitment to making effective reading instruction simple to teach and simple to learn.
