Robinson Reading: Encouraging Young Readers and Writers

This month a tutor from Robinson Reading Company had the privilege of being invited to speak at a local elementary school. She spoke with students about the Robinson Reading System, writing children's books for a decodable reading sequence, and on tools and strategies the students in the class could use for their own writing process. Students also learned how authors develop ideas, organize stories, and revise their work to create engaging books.

The visit was especially meaningful because several of the students had learned to read using the Robinson Reading System. The tutor read read Game On!, one of the Robinson Readers, to the class. Students were introduced to a simple story-planning template that helps young authors organize the beginning, middle, and end of their stories before they begin writing. Students developed their own story ideas and created plans for stories they could write themselves. The class session ended with a share-out of stories students came up with and a Q and A about the Robinson Reading System and the work of an author.

The students were curious, thoughtful, and full of creativity. They asked wonderful questions about becoming an author, finding ideas for stories, and improving their own writing through revision. The visiting tutor encouraged each of them to keep reading, keep writing, and never stop using their imagination, reminding them that every author grows through practice, persistence, and revision.
